When Discouragement Sets In

Sometimes I feel like when I have a wonderful idea, I get really excited about it and begin to make plans for this great idea. The next day I’m still really pumped up about it and start to wonder how I am going to make this great idea happen; and then all of a sudden; discouragement sets in. I feel like I can’t do it. It won’t be this big wonderful [insert whatever your idea is] but instead it will be pitiful and pathetic.

Is it just me or does anyone else ever feel this way?

We have so much excitement in the very beginning and are so enthused about how great this birthday party, or plan to make this DIY project or whatever it is, is going to turn out. And slowly, we start to pick at ourselves. We lose our confidence, lose our creativity, and lose ourselves in self-doubt. We think to ourselves, no one will like this, [insert name] will think this is stupid; and we tell ourselves that we can never do these types of things.

We surrender to defeat either when it’s knocking at our doors or when it hasn’t even made it to our house yet. We tear ourselves down. And you know what. . .

It’s time to stop.

Stop being so negative, stop doubting yourself, stop doubting others, stop criticizing yourself to every person you know. Let’s stop all the comparison. He is different from her, and she is different from him and they’re both different from you.

You can do anything that you think you can do. Cliché I know, but true.

Think to yourself, have you ever completed a project or task that you honestly thought you could not do. One that you tore yourself down the whole way through and criticized everything you did because you thought every single person should like it. You didn’t give yourself pep talks or tell yourself you could do this. When discouragement knocked at the door, you offered it to come right on in.

We do this every day without even thinking about it.  We need to tell ourselves that we can do this task along with anything else that comes our way. If you don’t know the answers, look them up or ask someone who may know. Talk yourself through things and my personal favorite is to pray. I pray for things like confidence and determination. I pray for Heavenly Father to guide me for the best way to complete these types of tasks. I pray that when I am done, that I will be able to feel a sense of accomplishment and that I will be able to help others with the same type of task should they ask for my help.

If self-doubt is something you struggle with, please check one of my other blog post’s What do you see in the mirror? You should find it very helpful along with this post.
